It was a superb event and it was great to see 78019 on the line. It looked and sounded wonderful. It had taken over the train at Horbury Junction. 71000 76079 is pictured approaching Ashley station on the 2nd May 2004 with 2Z78 16.25 Chester to Altrincham. 4472 6201 6233 wheels 1Z62 13.15 Carlisle to Preston away from Hellifield on the 9th July 2005. One of these days I'll phot a loco with some exhaust at this location! While running a series of specials round the Oldham Loop prior to the lines' proposed conversion to a tram route, 45157 leaves Settle on the 1st May 2001 with the 76079 - 61264 passes Sherburn-in-Elmet with 4472 45157 passes Stanicliffe, near Middleton with one of the 61264 coasts through Hillam, en route to a water stop at Milford Junction, on the 23rd April 2005. 3440 45157 & 76079 leave Castleton Station after a brief stop on the 21st April 2003. 46203 48151 makes one of it's periodic forays round the Cumbrian Coast on 6th June 1992. It's seen crossing the superb Levens Viaduct near Ulverston. 70000 71000 60800 is seen in wonderful low winter light, at Nappa, south of Hellifield, with a Preston to Carlisle charter on the 29th December 1999 We've not seen much of 45110 on the main line and one of the only tours it's run was on the 28th November 1998, when it was seen at Meal Bank, north of Kendal on the WCML, in company with 45407 on 60800 60532 Atmosphere aplenty as 34027 71000 After a hectic chase round the Cumbrian Coast, I caught up with 71000 at Ravenglass, on the 26th October 1996. Having detrained some of it's passengers it is pictured just leaving for Sellafield. Stanier 2968 is captured in superb light at Blea Moor, heading north with the Stanier Mogul, 2968, runs past Colton Junction with it's support coach on a York to Kidderminster positioning move. 12/4/97. 45596 46203 46203 46229 5029 5029 75014 and 70000 75014 pilots 70000 45407 passes Sowerby Bridge with a Heywood to Wakefield test run on the 8th September 1998. 45407 at Healey Mills with the returning test run of the 8th September 1998. 44767 coasts up Elland Bank prior to a water stop at Elland while on 75014 & 70000 46229 60800 6024 80079 and 80080 were paired for a Paignton to Exeter special on 2nd May 1994. Here they pass Cockwood Harbour in the early evening. 5305 and 71000 emerge from Geldholt Tunnel, Huddersfield on the 23rd April 1992 with a positioning special. 45596 46203 46229 48773 & 45407 head up the S & C near Horton-in-Ribblesdale on the 24th April 1999. I don't normally do tender-first shots, but I include this because of the railway infrastructure surrounding 48151 at Plumpton Junction on the 6th June 1992. Just about everything in the shot has gone; the box and sidings in particular. The Hoad Monument above Ulverston still surveys the scene to this day however. 70000 71000 2968 passes Pleasington with the 6201 46229 46441 passes through Grindleford with the return 71000 71000 44767 at Lower Darwen with 46229 60007 71000 B1, 1264 and 8F, 48151 wait to leave Hellifield on the 8th June 1999. The occasion was the first test run of 1264, which had just been restored to main line condition after many years work. 48151 was included for 1264 and 48151 head back down the S & C at Selside, after the former's test run, on the 8th June 1999.

It comes into it's own in dull weather and also has the added advantage of making it look more like the "old days". All these shots were taken in black and white - usually on Ilford XP2, which needs some "tweaking" to look half decent, as it lacks contrast/tonal range. 65894, a visitor from the North York Moors Railway, passes Burrs with a goods train on the 25th January 2004. This was the loco I drove and fired on my 30506 heads through Burrs Cutting in a dull patch on the 28th August 1993. Visiting 3278 34072 makes a very leaky crossing of Brooksbottom Viaduct with a Santa Special on the 8th December 1991. 35005 3822 from the Didcot Railway Centre, near Horncliffe with the 2pm from Bury on the 13th August 1993. I really miss the 42765 & 5690 Ex-GWR 2-8-0T, 4277 stands in Buckley Wells yard on the 26th October 1996. 4422 hurries along at Little Burrs on the 3rd January 1993. 4422 looks timeless at Ramsbottom on the 3rd January 1993. 4422 runs into Ramsbottom on the very cold 3rd January 1993. 45157 heads north at Burrs on the 22nd February 2003. 45157 45157 45157 charges over Little Burrs Bridge with the 1pm from Bury. 5/1/03. 45157 45212 and 75029 pound across the bridge at Little Burrs on the 26th October 2002. Both were visiting from the North Yorks Moors Railway. 46229 46441 is seen from Burrs Country Park with the 1.26pm 46441 runs into Irwell Vale with a Although Betty Beet's Ivatt 2-6-0, 46441 was not prototypical when it carried BR maroon livery, I still quite liked it as it looked pretty. Here it is at Little Burrs with 53809 passes Townsend Fold on the 14th August 1993. 5407, then owned by Paddy Smith, coasts into Ramsbottom on the 13th August 1994. I don't know why, but this shot always reminds me of Fort William. 5407 approaches Ramsbottom station through a forest of semaphores on 14th April 1995. 5593 60007 on Buckley Wells shed. 24th February 1996. The loco has thankfully recently been restored to working order at the NYMR. 62005 passes Burrs with the 11 o'clock from Bury on the 7th February 1999, in ideal lighting conditions. 76079 storms over Brooksbottom Viaduct with the 2pm from Bury. 4/1/03. 76079 passes a snow-covered Burrs on the 30th December 2001. 76079, then owned by Derek Foster, heads for Ramsbottom, at Nuttall, on the 26th January 1991. 76079 approaches Rawtenstall station on the 5th January 2003. 80136 climbs through Burrs on a blustery 7th February 1999. 80136, visiting from the Churnet Valley Railway, leaves Ramsbottom on the 27th February 1999. 92212 is seen on the lovely, crisp, snowy day of 30th December 2001 rushing through No 1 was the first (only?) loco in use on the ELR when it first opened. Here it passes Burrs on 14th April 1991. 44996 leaves Irwell Vale on the 29th October 2005 with 1J66 14.05 Rawtenstall to Bury. I was pleased to get at least one shot of this loco in it's authentic-looking 5690 44422 approaches Rawtenstall with a goods on the 16th April 2005. A dull day, but I still quite like the shot. Just after I'd taken it my camera lens fell in bits! Maybe it was trying to tell me something! God knows what the driver's thinking... A towering exhaust signals the departure of 7822 76079 departs Ramsbottom with the 11.00 Bury to Rawtenstall on the 7th April 2002 76079 leaves Ramsbottom on the 7th April 2002 with the 11am train from Bury 76079 is now owned by Ian Riley and has been a frequent sight at the ELR almost from the line's re-opening. Pictured on Brooksbottom Viaduct on the 10th January 1999 76079 & 75078 are pictured on Brooksbottom Viaduct on the 26th January 1991. Shots from this spot are now virtually impossible due to encroaching tree growth 75078 and 76079 attack the steepest part of the line, after leaving Summerseat Station on the 26th January 1991. 75078 was one of the first locos to visit the ELR from another steam railway, and is of course part of the KWVRs stable 62005 looks very authentic as it runs into Ramsbottom with a charter on the 7th February 1999. 62005 is more associated with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, but it too has visited the ELR. Here it is at Burrs on the 7th February 1999 62005 emerges from Little Burrs Cutting on the 7th February 1999 60800 leaves Irwell Vale on the 13th January 2001. 60800 arrives at Ramsbottom on the 13th January 2001.

So far the novelty hasn't worn off but I'm still waiting to hear that "clank"! 1054 waits to leave Damems Loop with the 6pm from Keighley. 1/4/95. 1054 arrives at Haworth on the very warm 17th May 1998. The Coal Tank, 1054 stands at Keighley with a goods on the 12th October 1996. 13809 visited the railway from Butterley a couple of times in the mid-eighties. It's seen here leaving Keighley on the 8th April 1984. On neither occasion it visited was the weather particularly sunny, but as it's most-recent overhaul is now completed, it might visit the KWVR again and perhaps the weather will co-operate! The loco certainly looked at home on the KWVR. 41241 nears Haworth Station with the 4.30 pm from Keighley. 15/6/2003. The KWVR's own 4F, 43924 stands at Oxenhope on the 18th September 1983. This loco has been out of use for many years, but is currently under overhaul. The driver reads his notices in Haworth Yard as his mate prepares 4422 for the 45212 heads away from Oakworth and passes Mytholmes on 26th December 2004 Boxing Day 2004 dawned bright and clear, with lying overnight snow. I thought I was going to miss this shot and then the sun suddenly burst out giving great lighting conditions! 41241 coasts to a stand at Damems Loop to await the passing of a Keighley-bound service on the 1st September 2002 52044 runs into Haworth on the 15th June 2003 43924 crosses Mytholmes Viaduct on 31st July 1983 45212 is owned by the KWVR, but is based on the NYMR under the terms of an overhaul agreement. In 2003 it was at the KWVR for a couple of months during the period of the Spring Gala. It's seen here climbing Keighley Bank on the 9th February 2003 5305 was based at the KWVR for a couple of years in the early 1990s. Here it's leaving Oakworth on the 9th May 1993. This shot is no longer available due encroaching to tree growth. 45596 45596 looks immaculate as it runs round at Oxenhope on the 18th October 1992 41708 glints nicely as it attacks Keighley Bank on 21st September 1997 47279 leaves Oakworth on the 9th October 2005 49395 nears Oakworth on the 14th October 2005, with the 12.40 Keighley to Oxenhope 49395 tackles Keighley Bank with the 17.10 goods to Oxenhope on the 14th October 2005. Evident is the steam leak from the cylinders, which didn't make the loco easy to photograph throughout the Autumn 2005 Gala. Didn't seem to bother the footplate crews though! 47279 shunts the stock of a goods working at Keighley on the 14th October 2005 Visiting 1300 leaves Oakworth on the hot, sunny afternoon of 21st July 1996 1300 approaches Oakworth on the 21st July 1996. There was no visible exhaust, as it was too warm - even at 6.50 pm!

The road bridge that passes over Haworth Yard was under repair at the time. Everything comes to Haworth sooner or later. 60009 69523 gives it's all at Mytholmes on the 18th October 1998. 69523 in the woods near Oxenhope with the 12.04 from Oakworth. 18/10/98. 69523 crosses Mytholmes Viaduct on 18th October 1998, with the 4.20pm from Oakworth. The Worth Valley is no exception and especially given it's north-south alignment some great "glint" shots can be taken. That's not to say that all the photos in this colllection will be "master shots" - especially the older stuff, but hopefully one or two might hit the spot! He was an avid and excellent Modern Traction photographer but also loved photographing steam, especially on the Settle & Carlisle railway. Whenever steam specials were about (most Saturdays in the 80's and 90's), he was to be found on the S & C, quite often at Foredale, as his companion, Geoff Greenwood was a video cameraman and Foredale is an excellent vantage point for that particular art. I inherited Mick's slides and while there are fewer steam shots than I would have expected, the best are displayed here. I hope that you enjoy viewing them as much as Mick enjoyed taking them. RIP. Most of the photos in here were taken at the railway's gala in September 2008 where it was especially nice to see "Morayshire in action. The weather co-operated too which made things all the better. Great scenery, great locos and loads of atmosphere. The sound of the locos barking their way up to Blaenau or Rhyd Ddu is unforgettable. What the preservationists have achieved to bring the lines from their state of dereliction to how they are today is nothing short of miraculous. I've visited the Festiniog on numerous occasions, starting at the age of seven or eight, although not in the last five years. Another visit seems urgent! I've visited the Welsh Highland only once - in September 2006, but I shall be going again. There are other Welsh narrow guage railways of course, but unfortunately the only one I've visited is the Bala Lake Railway. I really must get to the others sometime - especially perhaps the Vale of Rheidol and the Talyllyn. Enjoy!
