Perhaps my all time "classic" steam shot! 5305 leaves Blea Moor Tunnel on the 8th March 1986. The train was a special from Leeds to Carlisle conveying interested parties protesting at the imminent closure of the S & C. Luckily their protests were successful!

5593 "Kolhapur" at Lathom Level Crossing, near Burscough with the last special of the day from Manchester Victoria to Southport. 14/9/86.

5593 "Kolhapur" passes the Leeds and Liverpool canal, near Burscough Bridge on 14th September 1986. This was one of a series of trains from and to Manchester run in association with a Southport newspaper. These became an annual event for a few years in the eighties.

Superb glint as 4468 "Mallard" coasts through Bolton Percy on the 8th November 1986. The train was the "Peter Allen Pullman" from Marylebone to York and the reason for the "coasting" was the crew had nearly run out of coal!

5593 "Kolhapur" passes Parbold on the 14th September 1986 with the first special of the day from Southport to Manchester Victoria.

4498 "Sir Nigel Gresley" is seen at Wennington signal box during a photo run-past during the bottom leg of a "CME" on which I was travelling. 24/8/85. The box was demolished in 2005.

5305 leaves Hellifield after a water stop with "The Thames-Eden Express" 10/5/86.

13809 at Kildwick on the 16th August 1986 with the "West Yorkshireman" from Carnforth to Sheffield. The train's outward run took place in "full dull"!

5305 passes Gargrave on the 13th September 1986 with a CME.

6201 "Princess Elizabeth" approaches Settle Junction on the 15th November 1986. It was at the head of the Leeds to Carnforth leg of the "Golden Jubilee" charter.

2005 and 5305 come off Dandry Mire Viaduct with the "North Eastern", on the 26th July 1986.

Ex LNWR "Coal Tank", No 1054 leaves Manchester Victoria on the 25th July 1984 with one of a series of specials to commemorate the centenary of Wilson's Brewery. The sidings at the brewery, to which the train was bound have since been lifted.

92220 "Evening Star" used to be a welcome sight on the main line. Here it is at Smardale on the 23rd April 1988 with a southbound "Cumbrian Mountain Express"

4468 "Mallard" passes Heaton Lodge Junction on the very warm 31st July 1988. This was one of a series of specials across the North of England featuring "Mallard", celebrating it's 50th anniversary.

34092 charges up the bank at Settle Junction with the "Halifax Banker" on 23rd August 1986. The reason for the long shot is that the sun was about to go in!

44767 "George Stephenson" leaves Ribblehead station after a water stop with the "Keighley Flyer" from Carlisle to Oxenhope. 6/9/86. At Keighley the KWVR's 43924 was attached to the train to pilot it up to it's destination.

34092 "City of Wells" crosses the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, near Armley on the 5th August 1984. It was on the York to York, via Harrogate leg of a Scarborough Spa Express.

This shot was taken during a photographic "run past" during the journey of a Cumbrian Mountain Express on which I was travelling. 850 "Lord Nelson" at Appleby, 24th August 1985.

60009 "Union of South Africa" poses at Carlisle, having just conveyed me and others from Hellifield on a CME. 16/8/84.

No 850 "Lord Nelson" waits at Hellifield for the "bottom leg" of a Cumbrian Mountain Express to arrive. 3rd August 1985. This was long before Hellifield station was restored. Frankly, at this time it was a wreck!

Midland Compound No 1000 arrives at Hellifield on the 4th February 1983. This was the first weekend of two featuring this loco and "Leander" on the S & C. The northbound run left Hellifield extremely late, for reasons I can no longer remember. However this gave the assembled multitudes plenty of opportunity to photograph both 1000 and 5690 prior to departure.

46229 "Duchess of Hamilton" leaves Hellifield on the 28th May 1983. I've never seen anything quite like this - either before or since!

48151 crosses Arten Gill Viaduct with it's first main line train following restoration, on 25th June 1988.
